The Sun King: Charles's new mini solar farm now provides ALL power to Sandringham
While the latest heatwave is not being welcomed by everyone, there are some benefits – as the King has discovered.
The eco-conscious monarch's new solar farm in Norfolk is fully powering his Sandringham Estate, as well as a small amount left over feeding the National Grid.
The monarch started building the 2,000-panel facility on a former horse-grazing paddock behind the royal residence last October. It has now been connected up to the main house and its estate, so the King can make the most of the sunny weather.
The 2.3-hectare solar farm is providing a combined total of 2.1MW of zero carbon energy to Sandringham House, the Visitor Centre and the Sawmill.
It has an 'operational lifespan of 40 years', after which the field will eventually be returned to horse grazing.
Tall trees means the panels are mostly hidden from view for the estate's 500,000 annual visitors.
The panels are made from toughened glass and mounted on a steel framework. The King is determined to introduce as many renewable energy schemes to the royal landholding as possible.
